About this Research Topic

Manuscript Submission Deadline 27 November 2023
Manuscript Extension Submission Deadline 15 December 2023

Discovery and characterization of chemicals from natural product (NP) sources have inspired the development of many products and medicines, encouraging many research groups to dedicate efforts to sourcing molecules from plants, microorganisms, and other natural sources. However, identifying, and quantifying metabolites in extracts of natural products is a challenging and urgent task, and the traditional approach to the discovery of new molecules is time-consuming and laborious.

Metabolomics, which refers to the identification and/or quantification of small molecules produced by a biological system at a specific point in time analyzable by the chosen technique, can facilitate and accelerate the search for novel active agents. In this Research Topic, the use of NMR- or MS-based metabolomics is proposed as an efficient approach to finding bioactive metabolites in plants, microorganisms, and other natural sources.

We welcome Original Research, Review, Mini Review and Perspective articles on themes including, but not limited to:
• Metabolomics analysis of plants, microorganisms, and other natural sources.
• Metabolomics-based discovery of new molecules from plants, microorganisms, and other natural sources.
• Application of chemical natural products extracted from plants or microorganisms as novel ingredients in food and other applications.
• Metabolomic analysis of the effects of natural products or bioactive ingredients on rodents.
• Metabolomics-based quantification of small molecules produced by a biological system.
• Metabolomics of the interaction plant-endophytic organisms.
• Metabolomics screening of biomarkers in natural products and rodents after natural products or bioactive ingredients treatment.

Keywords: Metabolomics, Natural Products, Bioactive Ingredients, Biomarkers, Rodents, Applications

Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
