Specialty Chief Editor Professor Jin-Kuk Kim of the 'Thermal System Design' section of Frontiers in Thermal Engineering, along with Associate Editor Guilian Liu, is launching a Research Topic to highlight current challenges across the field of Thermal System Design.

The Specialty Chief Editor would like to invite critical contributions, whether theoretical, conceptual, or empirical that can provide new insights and stimulate a constructive debate around the following, not exhaustive, list of topics in process design and system integration for thermal engineering:
- Computer-aided process modeling, simulation and optimization for thermal sciences
- Process design, control and system integration of thermal equipment and processes
- Techno-economic evaluation and life-cycle analysis for thermal engineering
- System development, scale-up and demonstration of thermal technologies

A brief discussion of some of these topics and relevant references can be found in this Specialty Grand Challenge article.

The Research Topic invites contributions from the Editorial Board members of the 'Thermal System Design' section. Editors Challenge Article types include Brief Research Report, Original Research, Review, Mini Review, and Perspectives.
