Infectious diseases continue to be a significant cause of morbidity and mortality globally, and the ability to treat common infections is still threatened by antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Treatment of bacterial infections has been via conventional treatments which often lack targeting and leads to sub-lethal concentrations at the infection site, exposure to uninfected sites, elimination of the normal flora, and the inability to extend the half-life of drugs. Very few new drugs introduced to the market are with a different mechanism when compared with previous antimicrobials and this has led to cross-resistance. Therefore, new strategies are needed for combatting this AMR.

This Research Topic aims to draw attention to the need for a paradigm shift in combatting AMR by highlighting original research with alternative strategies in combatting AMR and reviews that show the progress in this field of research.

We welcome original research and review articles on themes including, but not limited to:
• Alternative means to overcome AMR and the development of new antimicrobials
• Nano-engineering of biomaterials
• Novel drug delivery systems
• Photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy (PACT)
