Asthma is a common chronic disease which affects adults and children, worldwide. Poorly controlled asthma affects not only the patients with the disease but also their caregivers, teachers, colleagues, employers, and other members of the community. Well-controlled asthma ensures that the discomforts from the disease, including deaths, are prevented, enabling patients to lead normal lives.
In asthma care, there are gaps in:
1. Equal access to diagnosis and treatment; between care for different socioeconomic, ethnic and age groups and between wealthy and poorer communities and countries
2. Communication and care across different levels of care; in communication and education provided for people with asthma
3. Asthma knowledge/awareness between health care providers
4. Prioritization between asthma and other chronic conditions between prescribing inhalers and monitoring adherence and ability to use these devices; exist for the general public’s (non-asthmatics)
5. Health care professional’s awareness and understanding that asthma is a chronic disease, between scientific evidence and actual delivery of care for people with asthma
6. Educational needs of those providing asthma care
7. Simplifying diagnosis for primary care
8. Establishing criteria for referral from primary care to specialist care
9. Involving patients in design, execution and analysis of translational studies asthma
