For over a century, the anthropogenic activity has made an unprecedented impact on the planet that, amongst other environmental problems, has incurred the threat of global warming. The relation between the continuing increase of global temperatures and anthropogenic emissions of so-called greenhouse gases (GHG) is evident. By signing the Paris Agreement, the majority of countries agreed on limiting the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels. However, keeping to the mentioned temperature levels requires unprecedented changes in the main economic drivers of global warming. The industrial sector is among the main sources of GHG emissions and is the sector that has shown the fastest growth in GHG emissions over the last two decades.

Given the developing turmoil on the global energy market, oil and gas supply-related issues increase concerns about the capability of the current industrial transition to cope with environmental, economic and social problems effectively. One of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set in the UN Agenda 2030, namely SDG 9 “Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation” aims to ease those concerns.

This research topic focuses on different aspects of promoting resilient and sustainable industrial production from the environmental economics perspective and welcomes researchers contributing
to such areas as:
• analysis of industrial hotspots
• environmental policy modeling
• identification of costs and environmental trade-offs of industrial innovation processes towards circular, bio-based or safe- and sustainable by-design products
• analysis of new value chains aimed at the industrial transition towards lean and clean production processes and supply chains
• role of industrial retrofitting to ensure more sustainable production
• role of industrial infrastructure in industrial transition
• relevant lessons that can be learned from the history of industrial development

Keywords: industrial transition, sustainability assessment, industrial retrofitting, sustainable industrial infrastructure, environmental policy modeling
