Most older individuals develop inflammation, a disease characterized by elevated levels of inflammatory markers. Chronic inflammation is thought to be a risk factor for a broad range of age-related diseases, including atherosclerosis, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, chronic respiratory diseases, and even cancer. Therefore, the elucidation of the sources and mechanisms of inflammation is an urgent task. The pathological mechanisms of inflammation are complicated and disease-specific. For instance, the inflammation in cardiovascular diseases, cerebrovascular diseases and neurogenic diseases share both similarities and specificities. However, the current clinical application of anti-inflammatory drugs lacks specific treatments for different diseases. Moreover, there are still problems in terms of efficacy and safety. Therefore, exploring specific inflammatory mechanisms and targets is of great significance for discovering anti-inflammatory drugs with better efficacy and safety, as well as improving the current clinical prevention and treatment of age-related diseases.

In this Research Topic, we aim to encourage researchers to explore the unmet clinical needs of anti-inflammatory therapy for age-related diseases and to discover new anti-inflammatory drugs and their usage timing, with higher specificity, more direct targets and lower toxic side effects. It is expected to jointly promote the understanding of the inflammatory mechanism and the progress of clinical anti-inflammatory.

Original research articles, reviews or methods focused on but not restricted to the following areas are encouraged,
1. Discovery of inflammatory mechanisms and targets in age-related diseases
2. Screening and construction of the inflammatory differential networks among age-related diseases, and finding their heterogeneity
3. Relationships between pathological processes and inflammatory characteristics and their specificity
4. Design and detection of novel anti-inflammatory drugs, improving on treating inflammation
5. Methodology and experimental models of anti-inflammatory drug screening

Keywords: chronic inflammation, age-related diseases, anti-inflammatory drug, inflammatory mechanisms
