Manuscript Submission Deadline 30 September 2023
Manuscript Extension Submission Deadline 31 January 2024

Centenarians represent a select group of people and the best model of successful aging. They live 100 years or more in relatively good health status, escaping fatal or strongly invalidating diseases lifelong. Thus, they are a concrete example of resilience.

The centenarian's number is growing all around the world, as well as the rest of the elderly population. This is a challenging problem for society, especially with the cost of the health care system and the difficulty in social engagement. Thus, the study of healthy longevity and the tools to reach it are key points for all nations and researchers. Moreover, the complexity of human beings makes it necessary to have a strict interconnection between different research fields (e.g., biomedical, phycological, social, etc).

The comparison of long-lived populations belonging to different and distant geographical areas could provide further details to define and complete the knowledge of centenarians located in various parts of the world. Studying the socio-economic context, different dietary habits, and lifestyles would enrich the information of the various research groups for the identification of factors that favor longevity. Indeed, the correlation between genetic background and the environment, in determining the individual chance of healthy aging, is an emerging topic in gerontology.

Therefore, the proven and significant correlation between the effects of the environment and molecular pathways may be used as preventive measures to increase the chance to reach the extreme limit of lifespan. In this regard, the research of zones in which the percentage of centenarians is extremely high is interesting to define common strategies to favor not only the reaching of aging in good health conditions but also the social asset to integrate this part of the population into social life.

The aim of the current Research Topic will be to collect studies that describe longevity from a different point of view to enhance our knowledge of the extreme limit of life.

We welcome submissions from original research articles, reviews, and metanalyses that cover the following (but are not limited to) issues about some different aspects of longevity worldwide:

- molecular (analyses of pathways involved in aging and longevity process)
- lifestyle (especially nutrition and exercise)
- socio-economic conditions and cognitive health.

Scientists belonging to different disciplines are strongly encouraged to submit their research to achieve an overall view of this phenomenon.

Keywords: Centenarians, Lifespan, Lifestyle, Longevity, Nutrigerontology

Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
