Carbon-based materials including but not limited to graphene, carbon nanotubes, carbon fibers, and their composites via advanced manufacturing have received tremendous attention during the past decades due to their unique properties such as excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, outstanding chemical resistance, superior mechanical properties, etc. Thus, they have been widely utilized in the fields of energy storage, structural materials, sensors, etc. by advanced manufacturing technologies (i.e., wet/melt spinning, solution casting, 3D printing, chemical/physical vapor deposition, etc.).

Even though many efforts have been contributed to the above areas, further investigations including both experimental and simulation studies should be carried out to better understand mechanisms behind the enhanced properties and new phenomena as well as the routes towards reduction of their overall cost via alternative precursors and novel manufacturing methods. Therefore, the main aim of this Special Issue is to tackle the points mentioned above for the preparation, characterization, and properties of advanced carbon-based materials and their composites to offer an insight into their fundamental science and utilization, facilitating their practical applications in energy and environmental fields
