About this Research Topic

Abstract Submission Deadline 30 June 2023
Manuscript Submission Deadline 15 December 2023

Given that marine sciences are one of the least ethnically and racially diverse of all STEM fields, we are proposing a Special Edition of Frontiers in Marine Science focused on broadening diversity and inclusion in marine science and technology. As one of the most cited journals in marine sciences, it is especially critical to focus on these pertinent issues. As a journal that seeks to catalyze progress by welcoming new ideas and approaches that are likely to shift paradigms in our understanding and interactions with the oceans, it is our goal to do the same in relation to broadening diversity and inclusion within marine science and technology.

The Special Edition has three main goals: (1) to highlight the current research around increasing diversity and inclusion in marine science and technology; (2) to serve as a platform to more broadly disseminate successful approaches, interventions, practices, and programs focused on diversity and inclusion in marine science and technology; (3) to encourage scholars from underrepresented and marginalized groups in publishing their own research on these topics. This edition will become a resource to those committed to helping dismantle the cultural, societal, and academic barriers for marginalized individuals within marine science and technology.

This Special Edition will include both solicited and invited papers with a range of topics and areas of interest with articles that showcase the perspectives of diverse researchers, students, educators, and others who are engaged in initiatives and programs with diverse communities in a variety of areas of marine science and technology. A particular focus will be on creating and articulating an understanding of how racism and other forms of conscious or unconscious discrimination and bias impact an individual’s academic and career journey to create barriers to entry, participation, success, and retention in the field. Successful strategies to help prepare, recruit, nurture, retain, and advance individuals from historically marginalized backgrounds will be included, as well as other areas of research as proposed by those from marginalized populations.

Keywords: Underrepresented Minorities, Diversity, Mentoring, Allyship, Experiential Research Opportunities, STEM Retention, Science Identity

Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
