Compulsive sexual behavior (CSB), is often described as having enhanced sexual activity and a lack of success in efforts to control such behavior. It is a pathological condition that results in emotional and cognitive impairments. Previous research has evaluated the development of sex addiction and its association with personality and it also examined gender differences. Most studies on sexual addiction rely on male rather than female samples. There is a need to investigate the main components of behavioral addiction as well as the cognitive, emotional, and neurobiological mechanisms underlying CSB.

The aim of the Research Topic is to bring together current research on the cognitive, emotional, and clinical mechanisms associated with CSB. We would like to bring together researchers from different disciplines who employ diverse methodological methods (e.g. experimental research, narrative studies, clinical and theoretical studies). Our aim is to review the evidence which has been accumulated in that field, present up-to-date findings, describe gaps in our knowledge, and point to future directions in research and practice. In particular, we encourage themes that have been little explored in this area such as the main components of ‘behavioral addiction’, cognitive and emotional mechanisms, gender differences, and Neuro-biological mechanisms.

We encourage contributors to submit and range of article types such as original research articles, systematic reviews, perspectives, and mini-reviews that contribute to research on compulsive sexual behavior, including but not limited to:

• The main components of ‘behavioral addiction’: salience, mood modification, tolerance, withdrawal, conflict, and relapse
• Cognitive mechanisms
• Internet pornography
• Comorbidity and Personality
• Childhood sexual abuse and neglect
• Gender differences
• Neuro-biological mechanisms.

Keywords: Compulsive Sexual Behaviour, Hypersexual Behaviour, Sex Addiction

Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
