Alternative methods: how to replace animal testing with non-invasive methods in immunotoxicology

Introduction and general guidelines
This series aims to highlight the latest experimental techniques and assessment methods used to investigate fundamental questions in regulatory toxicology research, including but not limited to
• new approach methods (NAMs) that have particular regulatory applications for next
generation risk assessment,
• case studies on concepts and methodologies such as adverse outcome pathways or read across,
• review articles or opinions on drivers and barriers for regulatory acceptance of NAMs, e.g. animal welfare, method validation, applications or assessment strategies including the advantages and limitations of each are welcome.

This Topic includes technologies, up-to-date methods, model applications and innovative evaluation schemes for next generation risk assessment which help advance science and regulatory practice.

The contributions to this collection will undergo peer-review. Novelty may vary, but the utility of a method / protocol or an evaluation scheme must be evident. We welcome contributions covering all aspects of regulatory toxicology. Submissions will be handled by the team of Topic Editors in the respective sections.

This Research Topic welcomes:
• Methods: Describing either new or existing methods that are significantly improved or adapted for regulatory impact. These manuscripts may include primary (original) data.
• Protocols: Detailed descriptions, including pitfalls and troubleshooting, to benefit those who may evaluate or employ the techniques. The protocols must result in robust outcomes, they must be proven to work and should ideally provide reporting guidance on how to submit respective data to evaluating regulatory bodies.
• Perspective or General Commentaries on methods, protocols and assessment strategies relevant for regulatory toxicological research.
• Reviews and mini-reviews of protocols and evaluation schemes highlighting the important future directions of the field.
• Case studies illustrating the application of methods and protocols including discussion of advantages and limitations.

Keywords: #CollectionSeries, NAMS, methods, protocols, new experimental techniques, regulatory toxicology, product safety, MOA, AOPs, KE / MIE, in vitro, DNT, PBPK, IVIVE, read-across, next generation risk assessment

Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
