Metrology is the science of measuring and ensures the accuracy, stability, and repeatability of measurements, which affects almost every aspect of our lives. Recent advances in the field of Life Science, particularly in genomics, proteomics and single-cell analysis technologies, have raised high hopes for the development of breakthroughs that could motivate a paradigm shift that could enable us to better understand cellular composition, biological processes, and human diseases, as well as provide us with new clues regarding the development of drugs and therapeutics. Good measurements contribute to a deeper understanding of Life Sciences. But unfortunately, Life Science metrology is still in its infancy and faces numerous challenges that need to be addressed. Mass spectrometry (MS) is a powerful tool for basic Life Science measurements, which has been widely used in studies of single-cells, proteomics and post-translational modifications. Due to the fact that the world still lacks reference methods, materials and standards in various fields of Life Science, particularly for omics studies and single-cell analyses, having metrology provide a strong foundation for MS-based measurements in Life Science is of upmost importance.

In this research topic, we will focus on the latest developments and challenges in MS-based methods, tools, and technologies that could improve the measurement reliability of Life Science. Also, we are very interested in receiving research on the development of metrological materials, standards and techniques for the application of MS technologies in the fields of Life Science.

We are interested in receiving both original research and review/perspective articles that contribute, but are not restricted to, the development of new methodologies and applications in MS techniques, devices, measurements and metrologies, surrounding the following topics:
• New methods and techniques for MS-based metrology in Life Sciences;
• Development of MS devices, techniques, measurements and metrologies for studies in single cells, proteomics and post-translational modifications;
• The usage of MS techniques and metrology in Life Sciences, particular for cancer studies;
• Analysis tools, algorithms, software and reference databases for mass spectrometry.

Keywords: life sciences, mass spectrometry, metrology, single cells, proteomics, modifications

Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements.
