Third molar surgery is one of the most popular directions in oral and maxillofacial surgery and discussed topic in the peer-reviewed publications. The wisdom teeth can be a source of pericoronitis, pericoronal pathology, orthodontic problems, resorption of the adjacent tooth root, etc. Moreover, third molars are the “spare wheels” which can be used in autotransplantation for the replacement of missed teeth.
The role of digital planning and imaging in the management of third molar-related tasks is growing. A multidisciplinary approach to the discussion of third molars management in every particular case is encouraged. Application of virtual simulation technology, 3D-printed computer-aided rapid prototyping in autotransplantation, application of microscope, guided osteotomy, and even the ultrasonography of the periosseous tissues in infection cases are hot topics among practitioners. That is why we dedicate this Research Topic to the modern international experience related with this group of teeth.

Our main goal is to publish the studies which can make the management of third molars issues more smooth thus contributing to the patient’s health and well-being. Highlighting the advances in wisdom teeth surgeries planning and performance is a key stone of this Research Topic. Also, the incorporation of cutting-edge techniques and imaging possibilities to a daily practice of dentist and surgeons are among the top priorities of published papers in this article collection.

Third molar themes that will be considered in this Research Topic include:

• imaging focused on wisdom teeth and neighboring tissues
• impacted/semi-impacted/ectopic teeth
• pericoronitis and wisdom teeth-associated infection
• analysis of the neighboring anatomical structures and the ways they are impacted on third molar surgery
• tooth trauma, germectomy, coronectomy
• autotransplantation and digital technologies for teeth autotransplantation
• local and systemic complications
• third molars and orthognathic surgery
• all types of anesthesia for third molars surgery
• pre-/post-operative medications
• bone fractures in the area of wisdom tooth
• pulp vitality tests, lesions/diseases associated with third molars
• analysis of armamentarium, surgical approaches, and minimally invasive surgical techniques

High-quality original research and review papers are welcome as well as a unique case reports and case series manuscripts.

Keywords: third molars, wisdom teeth, third molar germectomy, coronectomy, third molar autotransplantation

Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
