Sjögren’s syndrome (SS) is a connective tissue systemic disease characterized by a wide spectrum of disease manifestations, mainly including sicca symptoms and fatigue, but with the potential involvement of any extra-glandular organ and, consequently, high heterogeneity of possible clinical presentations. Pathophysiological mechanisms underlying such a variability are only in part elucidated. The disease burden is high for almost the totality of SS patients, and a specifically SS-approved therapy is still lacking.

The new direction of research in SS is to identify homogeneous groups of patients, taking into account different patterns of symptoms, clinical manifestations, biomarkers, and pathophysiological mechanisms, with the aim of contributing to SS stratification, also in the perspective of a better future definition of diagnostic, therapeutic and prognostic pathways for these patients.

All types of manuscripts fitting the goal of the Research topic, ranging from basic to translational, and clinical research, are welcome.

Keywords: Sjögren, pathogenesis, heterogeneity, symptoms, clinical.

Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements.
