Nowadays, circular economy is a crucial point of sustainability. Agri-food wastes are associated with a real environmental drawback, and waste disposal becomes a challenge in agri-food industrial economy. Many residues such as peels, pomace, wastewaters, stems, leaves, and flowers are discarded in high quantities and a deep effort is being placed on the use of these wastes generated from food chain production. The utilization of agricultural wastes as an abundant, renewable, and low-cost source for the production of high value-added products is currently explored. Bioactive compounds, in particular polyphenols, present in these sources have been proved to possess a wide range of nutraceutical and biological activities, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory or even anticancer. In fact, recently, scientific community highlighted how dietary polyphenols exert various health benefits for the prevention and treatment of different pathological disorders. For this reason, the recovery of valuable bioactive polyphenols from the food supply chain byproducts is a point of interest in term of sustainability and revalorization.

These topics make researchers aware of the possibility to recover polyphenols from food discards, focusing on the chance to identify valuable molecules presenting different biological properties (e.g., antioxidant, antimicrobial, or anti-inflammatory activities) and devoting to a useful applications in the nutraceutical, cosmeceutical, and pharmaceutical fields.

This Research Topic welcomes original research articles, reviews and mini-reviews regarding, but not limited to, the following themes:

- The latest advances in the study of bioactive polyphenols from agri-food waste.
- Extraction, chemistry, chemical characterization, absorption mechanism, and metabolism of bioactive polyphenols from agri-food wastes.
- Insights on the relationship between chemical composition and biological activity of dietary polyphenols' biological processes in target cells and tissues.
- Qualitative and quantitative analytical characterization of the polyphenols in the plant and food matrix of interest and their eventual metabolites.

Keywords: Sustainability, Agri-Food Wastes, Polyphenols, Nutraceuticals, Extraction, Absorption Mechanism, Metabolism

Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
