About this Research Topic

Manuscript Submission Deadline 10 December 2023

The first RdRp summit (related to RNA-dependent RNA polymerase of RNA viruses) is an event focused on establishing an interoperable framework for the discovery, identification and analysis of RNA viruses. RNA virus discovery has seen an explosive increase in data generation in recent years, however, current methodological divergence in the analysis and identification of viral RNA Dependent RNA Polymerases (RdRps) is hindering collaboration and reproducibility in the field. To address this issue, the summit aims to establish minimal reporting standards, define fundamental terms and methodologies, and establish a standardized Viral RdRp meta-data format.

This article collection aims to gather research that addresses the topics discussed at the RdRp Summit, showcasing research that contributes to the summit's goals of establishing minimal reporting standards, defining fundamental terms and methodologies, and establishing a standardized Viral RdRp meta-data format. The collection is open to any other potential outcomes that could benefit the field of RNA virus discovery.

The article collection welcomes submissions that contribute to the establishment of minimal reporting standards, fundamental terms and methodologies, and a standardized Viral RdRp meta-data format, Including but not limited to:
• Fundamentals of RNA virus operability: definitions of the term 'RNA virus', quality and confidence metrics, minimal reporting and metadata standards, novelty estimations, and frequent false positives to be vigilant of.
• RNA virus categorization and data centralization: guidelines for phylogeny or clustering, handling sequence and data deposition, automation of report filing and report testing.
Other topics related to RNA virus discovery are also welcome.

More information on the meeting: https://rdrp.io/ ,

Keywords: : Virus discovery, RNA virus, RNA polymerase, Genomic metada standards

Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
