About this Research Topic
The aim of this Research Topic is to gather research relating to biodegradable packaging, such as their sourcing and application in food industries. It will focus on the production and characterization of biodegradable food packaging derived from plant, animal and microbial sources. Articles will highlight nano-technological interventions in biodegradable food packaging and the less-studied microbial biopolymer-based biodegradable food packaging, and will cover the latest research and development in the areas of food processing, food packaging, material science and polymeric science. The collection also covers the various standards and regulatory guidelines about the biodegradability testing of these polymers.
Submissions will be accepted in the form of Original Research, Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses, Reviews and Clinical Trials. Subtopics of interest in this context include (but are not limited to):
• Plant- and animal-derived enzymes and their potential application in food processing and preservation
• Microbial derived biodegradable polymers as food packaging tools
• Green polymer-based biodegradable food packaging
• Downstream processing strategies for synthesis of biodegradable polymers
• Functionality test methods for biodegradable polymers
• Nanocomposite biodegradable polymers for food packaging
• Biopolymer-based active and intelligent packaging for food applications
• Standards and guidelines for testing biodegradability of bio-plastic
• Sustainable techniques for biodegradable packaging
• Metabolic engineering for the synthesis of biodegradable polymers with potential applications in food packaging
• Application of biopolymer blends as edible films and coatings in food packaging
• Standards and guidelines for testing biodegradability of bio-plastic
