About this Research Topic
The goal of this Research Topic is to deepen our current understanding of the urological microbiome and its response to antibiotics through metagenomic analysis, with the aim of improving the management of urological infections and developing more effective therapies. This includes exploring the factors that influence the diversity and composition of the urogenital microbiome, its role in urological health, and the impact of AMR on urological health. The use of metagenomic analysis to identify resistant bacteria and resistance genes will also be examined.
Specific sub-themes of interest include but are not limited to:
1. Taxonomical and functional diversity of the gut and circulating microbiome in urological diseases across various populations.
2. Role of the gut and circulating microbiome in renal disease etiology, pathophysiology, and response to medications and clinical procedures.
3. Relationship between the gut and circulating microbiome changes, host gene expression, immune response and urological disease progression.
4. The effect of medications, surgical procedures, environmental exposures, and physiological stress on the human microbiome and its impact on the etiology and pathology of urological diseases.
5. Investigating the link between the microbiome and the immune response, and the impact of antimicrobial resistance on urological diseases using metagenomics.
6. Translational perspectives on the gut and circulating microbiome in urological diseases.
7. Developing novel interventions and therapies for urological infections, including the use of probiotics, prebiotics, and phage therapy.
8. New diagnostic tools for urological infections based on metagenomic analysis.
9. Examining the role of bacterial virulence factors, including Outer Membrane Vesicles, in urological infections and their potential as therapeutic targets.
10. Ethical considerations surrounding the use of metagenomic data in urological research and clinical practice, including data sharing and patient privacy.
Authors are encouraged to submit original research articles, reviews, and perspectives related to the above sub-themes. Studies with a focus on clinical relevance and the potential for translation into clinical practice are particularly welcomed. Additionally, authors are encouraged to provide insights into the limitations and future directions of their research.
