About this Research Topic

Manuscript Submission Deadline 03 May 2024

Diabetes is a global health threat and its prevalence continues to increase. Alongside the rising cost of care, this growing prevalence has greatly increased the economic burden of treating diabetes complications. Such costly complications include amputation, blindness, kidney failure and strokes. It is therefore important to understand the factors contributing to this burden, novel models of assessing this burden, and ways in which health services can be improved to reduce this burden.

As part of the journal’s mission to address key subjects on the improvement of clinical services in relation to diabetes complications, Frontiers in Clinical Diabetes and Healthcare is organizing a Research Topic focused on the ‘The Economic Implications of Treating Diabetes Complications'. Led by an expert team of specialists, this Research Topic will accept manuscripts within this area of research, with the aim of giving the reader an overview of the latest discoveries and new findings, analysis of previously published data, new opinions and perspectives, and methods and protocols (when relevant). For that reason, all article types accepted by Frontiers are encouraged.

Specific themes of interest include, but are not limited to:

- Economic models for the treatment of diabetes complications

- Factors contributing to the economic impact of diabetes complications

- Affordability and patient access to therapies

- Cost effectiveness analysis of treating diabetes complications

- The relationship between burden of disease and cost of care

- Ways of reducing the economic burden of treating diabetes complications
