Background

Digital twin technologies are becoming one of the most promising technical trends, and widely recognized as the key in the digital transformation of the construction industry. Seamless interaction and synchronization between a physical construction and its digital counterpart potentially provide higher productivity, more efficiency and transparency in management, and greater intelligence in the decision-making process, during the whole life-cycle of a construction project. Although digital twining technologies have been successfully applied to various domains such as aerospace engineering, the healthcare industry, and manufacturing, the adoption of the digital twining concept in construction is still at an early stage and remains a challenge. This Research Topic aims to create a referencing source of advancements in theories, algorithms, applications, and products in digital twining in construction.

This Research Topic aims to capture the state of the art of digital twining research, including key enabling technologies, major potential applications, regulations and policies, together with challenges in digital twining in construction. The collection stands at the intersection of multi-disciplinary areas, which will be applicable at different stages of a construction projects, ranging from the design stage to the construction stage, as well as operation and maintenance stages. The objective is to publish high quality and original research papers and state-of-the-art reviews from academia, governments, and industry, which provide significant contribution and advance scientific knowledge in the related fields.

The scope of this Research Topic is extensive and includes, but is not limited to, the following themes:

• Data acquisition technologies for construction site;
