Modern biomedical imaging techniques are essential tools in clinical diagnosis and therapy assessment, allowing the non-invasive, highly sensitive and specific observation of pathological and physiological events associated with human diseases in living subjects. Thanks to the advantages of temporal-spatial resolution, high sensitivity, higher penetration depth and nonionizing radiation, NIR-II imaging shows special significance in the development of observing and evaluating biological processes in living subjects. Up to now, several other available fluorophores, including small organic dyes, quantum dots conjugated polymers and rare-earth-doped nanoparticles, have also been actively employed for NIR-II biomedical imaging. However, NIR-II nanoprobes with high quantum yield, low biotoxicity and integrated more functions are still the targets of researchers.

Recently, NIR-II imaging has been extensively studied and used in life sciences and medical research due to its lower background and higher penetration depth. The combination of novel imaging technology and therapeutics can achieve early diagnosis, precise positioning, in situ treatment, as well as efficacy monitoring during treatment and prognosis, promoting the development and clinical transformation of multi-functional nano-drug. The purpose of this research topic is to gather a collection of latest studies in NIR-II imaging nano-drug, toxicological research of nano-drug and the related fields. We welcome research articles and review articles that explore the use of NIR-II imaging technology in multi-functional nano-drugs, as well as other related topics. We encourage researchers to submit their latest findings and progress to help advance our understanding of this rapidly growing field. We welcome Original Research, Review, Mini Review and Perspective articles on the themes including, but not limited to:
• The design and synthesis of novel NIR-II fluorescence nanoprobes and exploring their diverse applications in bioimaging
• Disease diagnosis and therapy

Keywords: NIR-II imaging, Biomaterials, Imaging diagnosis, Novel imaging technology

Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
