The evolution of cardiovascular imaging techniques has revolutionized cardio therapeutics, enabling accurate diagnosis, risk stratification, and personalized treatment. From conventional angiography and echocardiography to advanced modalities like CT, MRI, and intravascular imaging, each leap has expanded our understanding of cardiovascular diseases. Nuclear imaging techniques assess myocardial perfusion and viability and permit evaluation of plaque biology, while CT and MRI provide detailed visualization of the coronary arteries and cardiac structure, precise evaluation of the cardiac function, and realistic flow simulations and quantification of the local hemodynamic forces distribution. Intravascular imaging techniques have been recently proven a valuable tool in assessing plaque pathology and vulnerability and guiding coronary interventions. The future holds tremendous potential, with hybrid imaging modalities combining techniques with complimentary advantages that promise complete assessment of the anatomy, physiology, and biology of cardiac structures. The existing and emerging imaging modalities and the advances in pharmacotherapy and percutaneous and surgical interventions are expected to enable future personalized patient care and allow successful treatment of challenging clinical scenarios and of patients with advanced cardiovascular diseases.

This topic focuses on the role of cardiovascular imaging in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. We invite authors to submit reviews and original research articles that:

1. Summarize the evolution of established invasive and non-invasive cardiac imaging techniques

2. Highlight the role of imaging in cardiac diagnostics

3. Underscore the value of cardiac imaging in guiding percutaneous or surgical interventions

4. Present emerging invasive and non-invasive imaging techniques

5. Outline the value of cardiac imaging in risk stratification

6. Discuss the new horizons that artificial intelligence-based methods have opened to cardiac imaging-based diagnostics

Keywords: Evolution of Cardiovascular Imaging, Heart Imaging

Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
