Sea turtles are charismatic marine reptiles that play a crucial role in maintaining the health and balance of marine ecosystems. Unfortunately, sea turtles are threatened worldwide from human activity. Some of these anthropogenic impacts include climate change, illegal trade, coastal degradation, plastic ingestion and entanglement, bycatch, and accidental boat strikes. Because of the diverse set of threats they face, more research is needed to address the challenge of managing their populations and to help develop effective conservation strategies.

To celebrate World Sea Turtle Day (June 16th, 2023) we aim to highlight novel sea turtle research through this Research Topic. We invite scientists, conservationists, and experts from various disciplines to contribute their original research and perspectives to advance our understanding of sea turtles.

The scope of this Research Topic is broad, encompassing many disciplines of sea turtle research. We welcome contributions covering a wide range of topics related to turtles, including, but not limited to, the following:

- In-water animal behavior
- Nesting biology
- Habitat use
- Threat assessment
- Conservation management

We also encourage submissions from underrepresented regions. For any specific questions, please reach out to Professor Hector Barrios-Garrido at hector.barrios@kaust.edu.sa.

Keywords: marine turtle, nesting ecology, conservation, foraging, climate change

Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
