The valorization of biowaste for sustainable bioenergy production has gained significant importance worldwide. Effectively managing and safely disposing of biowaste are major concerns in modern society. When biowaste is adequately valorized, it mitigates negative environmental impacts but also resolves several other issues such as waste disposal problems, various health issues, etc. Biowaste rich in organic materials holds substantial potential for bioenergy production, which supports sustainable development and a circular bioeconomy. Bioenergy is an adaptable and cost-effective energy source that emits less carbon, promotes carbon neutrality, and reduces dependence on fossil fuels. Both solid and liquid biowastes are renewable resources that provide abundant and inexpensive raw materials for various applications. They have the potential to address multiple pressing challenges, such as increasing energy demand, climate change, pollution, and energy security, while contributing to the achievement of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Various traditional and advanced technologies for biowaste valorization, including mechanical, chemical, thermochemical, biochemical, and bioelectrical methods, are employed to convert biowaste into bioenergy and biofuels. This type of valorization is considered cost-effective and does not compete with the rising demand for food and feed. However, several technical challenges must be addressed to efficiently recover energy from biowastes. These challenges include the effective segregation of organic waste, the conversion processes for bioenergy, the availability of suitable microbial strains, and process optimization. Researchers are working on systematic strategies to convert biowaste into bioenergy more efficiently. Globally, innovative tools such as nanotechnology, life cycle assessment (LCA), and artificial intelligence (AI) are being utilized to explore environmentally sustainable processes, aiming to integrate social and economic benefits while quantifying the environmental impacts of bioenergy production from various biowaste materials.

This research topic aims to address key aspects of biowaste biomass conversion into bioenergy, focusing on advances in chemical, biochemical, bio-electrochemical, and thermochemical pretreatment processes, including gasification, liquefaction, pyrolysis, anaerobic digestion, alcoholic fermentation, and photobiological bioenergy production processes. It will consider the challenges, benefits, and environmental impacts related to these technological processes. We encourage submissions on themes including, but not limited to:

- Bioenergy and biofuel production from biowaste containing organic materials
- Advances in the mechanical conversion of biowaste into briquettes and pellets, considering size, moisture content, and drying surface area
- Progress in biochemical pretreatment and saccharification technologies for producing fermentable sugars from biowaste
- Innovations in traditional fermentation, electro-fermentation, and nanotechnology for bioethanol, biobutanol, and biohydrogen production
- Developments in thermo-chemical technologies, such as torrefaction, gasification, liquefaction, pyrolysis, and plasma gasification of biowaste to generate biochar, bio-oil, and syngas
- Advances in utilizing biowaste, lignocellulosic waste, algal biomass, and other lipids to produce biodiesel via transesterification
- Improvements in anaerobic digestion and biogas technologies for converting biowaste to bioenergy, focusing on novel microbial strains, process design, and optimization
- Advances in bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) for biowaste conversion to bioenergy, employing nanotechnology, genetic, and metabolic engineering approaches
- Applications of the circular bioeconomy concept, sustainability practices, life cycle assessment (LCA), and artificial intelligence (AI) to create an integrated biorefinery system aimed at achieving zero emissions and protecting the environment
