To achieve the goal of sustainable energy valorisation, the dependence away from fossil-fuels to renewable alternatives, such as Organic Solid Wastes (OSWs), is a step in the right direction. A significant amount of OSWs (biomass, sewage sludge, etc.) are generated due to increasing population and rapid urbanization. Low-carbon sustainable treatments have been developed to recover energy (biogas, bio-oil, platform chemicals, carbon material, syngas, etc.) and nutrients (protein, phosphorus, organic acids, etc.) from this waste. However, additional options for the sustainable treatment of OSWs are required due to their generally complicated and environmentally sensitive properties. For example, the combination of thermal and biological treatment of OSWs has recently been recognized as a promising technology to reduce waste volume, efficiently recover bioenergy (e.g., biogas), destroy organic contaminants, and eliminate pathogens.

This Research Topic is designed to collect original research and review articles focusing on sustainable utilization of organic solid wastes. It brings together emerging approaches, challenges, and opportunities related to new developments in OSWs valorisation aiming to enhance utilization efficiency and explore energy in a more sustainable approach.

In this Research Topic, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:
• thermal (hydrothermal and pyrolysis) treatment of various organic solid wastes;
• biological treatments for high energy recovery from various organic solid wastes;
• combination of two or more methods to treat various organic solid wastes;
• green catalytic conversion of various organic solid wastes or their derived model compounds;
• element recovery technologies from various organic solid wastes;
• other novel treatment technologies for the valorization of various organic solid wastes.
