About this Research Topic

Manuscript Submission Deadline 06 March 2024

This Research Topic is still accepting articles. For authors aiming to contribute, please submit your manuscript today

This Research Topic is Volume II of a series. The previous volume can be found here:Micro-Nano Experimental Mechanics of Solid Films

Solid films including metals, ceramics, nanocomposites, and hierarchical structures, etc. can be used for a variety of applications such as electronics, sensors, protective coatings, etc. The mechanical properties of solid films will affect their performance and stability as they may be subject to many kinds of loadings under service conditions. Design of novel structured solid films with enhanced performance relies on the study of their micro- /nanomechanics to explain the microstructure evolution under elastic and plastic deformations and microstructure-mechanical property relations, as well as their failure mechanisms.

Experimental studies of mechanics at the micro-/nanoscale are hindered by technical difficulties. A lot of experimental methods have been developed to determine the mechanical properties of solid films, such as nanoindentation, micropillar compression, bulge tests, tensile tests, etc. Stress-strain relation and microstructural deformation can be derived from these tests combined with in-situ or ex-situ electron microscopy and spectroscopy characterizations. Therefore, this research topic is expected to stimulate investment in micro- /nanomechanics of solids films with advanced experimental techniques, for their performance improvement in real applications.

The scope of this Research Topic is focused on experimental studies of mechanics at the micro-/nanoscale of solid films. This topic involves microstructure characterization of solid films, microstructure evolution during elastic and plastic deformations, mechanical properties such as strength, strain, Young’s modulus investigations, mechanical behaviors and failure mechanisms under various loading conditions. High-quality Original Research and Review articles in this field are all welcomed for submission to this Research Topic. Research interests include but are not limited to the following areas:

• Solid film materials with novel microstructures or extraordinary mechanical properties, such as metals, ceramics, nanocomposites, multilayers, hierarchical structures, etc.
• Experimental techniques such as nanoindentations, compression, tensile tests, bulge test, microcantilever indentations, in situ SEM/TEM mechanical tests, etc.
• Mechanical behaviors: elastic, plastic deformations, etc.
• Applications: electronics, aerospace, energy storage, etc.

Keywords: solid films, microstructure, elastic and plastic deformation, mechanical properties, microstructure-mechanical property relations, failure mechanisms

Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
