Cities represent an extraordinary arena for economic and social growth. We heavily rely on them to achieve our ambitions and to grow as individuals and organizations. The way cities develop, the location of major activities, and how they integrate with transportation modes significantly impact the opportunities we can access, our health, and environmental quality.
However, these factors contribute to generating inequalities, particularly for the most vulnerable populations. The study, formulation of improvement alternatives, and evaluation of these elements can play a significant role in the quality of life for millions of citizens, especially in the Global South.
This Research Topic invites the research community to contribute to the discussion on accessibility issues and how various strategies related to opportunity localization, transportation modes, affordability, and individual characteristics can help reduce inequalities. Research related to urban planning and sprawl, strategies for social housing development, their influence on urban segregation and fragmentation is also welcome. Topics such as TOD and equitable urban development as well as environmental justice should be approached.
The main topic to be addressed is that of inequalities arising for the most vulnerable citizens, stemming from urban structure, infrastructure provision, and the operation of transportation systems. Papers will explore the social, economic development, and health impacts on this population. They will review evidence from projects that have successfully integrated land use and transportation to mitigate inequalities.
Research addressing the following topics should be considered:
- Accessibility and equity
Land use planning, TOD and social housing and their impact on inequalities
- Compact cities with mixed use, walkability vs urban sprawl, The 15 minute city paradox
- Impact of mass transit, public transport operation and informal transport on accessibility
- Affordability, transport subsidies and their impact on accessibility
- Environmental justice, unhealthy environment for low income population
- Inequalities for vulnerable population such as migrants, low income population, elderly and gender inequality
Keywords:
