Along with the rapid economic development and urbanization, air pollution has become a global issue, especially in developing countries such as China and India. Air pollution produces harmful effects on human health, ecosystems, and agricultural production. For a better scientific understanding of global air quality and its impacts on climate change and human health, many advanced techniques including observation, remote sensing, and chemical transport models (CTMs) have been developed. The combination of multiple techniques promotes the high-quality advancement of this discipline.

This Research Topic is dedicated to the application of various techniques in air quality research. The Research Topic mainly covers these aspects: (1) the field measurement of air quality, (2) the remote sensing of atmospheric compositions, and (3) the development and application of physical and statistical models.

The Research Topic includes, but is not limited to the following topics:
• Field measurement of atmospheric compositions (e.g., ultrafine particles and reactive pollutants)
• Reaction and formation mechanisms of key reactive pollutants (e.g., HONO, ClNO2)
• Satellite observations of air pollutants
• The development of retrieval algorithms
• Spatiotemporal analysis and health effect assessment of air pollution
• The high-resolution estimates of air quality based on CTMs and machine-learning models
• The emission inversion of primary pollutants by advanced techniques (e.g., EnKF, 4DVAR)
• The improvements of CTMs and Earth System Models
• The ecological impact of air pollution
