Telemedicine in the care of older patients has gained significant attention, particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic, which necessitated alternative healthcare delivery methods. Prior to the pandemic, the use of telemedicine in this demographic was limited, but the lockdowns highlighted its potential to maintain healthcare continuity for older individuals confined to their homes. This shift has underscored the importance of telehealth in providing patient-centered, accessible, and coordinated care. Recent studies have shown that most older patients report positive experiences with telemedicine, especially when they have established personal relationships with their healthcare providers. Telemedicine's ability to utilize audio, video, and other communication modalities has been instrumental in reducing emergency department visits and hospitalizations, particularly among nursing care patients. Despite these advancements, there remains a need for further investigation into optimizing telemedicine practices and addressing barriers to its widespread adoption among older adults.
This Research Topic aims to explore the innovative applications and strategies of telemedicine in the care of older patients. We seek to answer critical questions about the effectiveness, accessibility, and patient satisfaction associated with telehealth services for the elderly. Additionally, we aim to test hypotheses related to the reduction of acute healthcare needs through telemedicine and to identify factors that enhance or hinder its acceptance among older populations.
To gather further insights in the realm of telemedicine for older patients, we welcome Original Research, Reviews, Mini-reviews, Case Reports, Clinical Trials, and Opinion articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:
• The development and application of telemedicine in the care of older patients.
• Methods and modalities of telehealth.
• The benefits of telemedicine in the older population.
• Attitudes, barriers and acceptability of telemedicine by older people.
• The use of telemedicine in primary care and in nursing homes.
• Future directions in providing telehealth to older people.
By sharing your research and insights, we believe we can build a body of work that significantly forwards progress in this vital area of geriatric care.
