Our world is undergoing unprecedented warming, leading to new occupational health risks and to an increase of existing ones. These risks are derived from climate-induced changes in the distribution and activity of toxic substances (including biological agents), and they warrant urgent attention.
Every year in April the International Labour Organization (ILO) promotes World Day for Safety and Health at Work, with the aim to raise awareness around the prevention of occupational accidents and illnesses globally. This year the awareness day will be held on April 28 and focuses on the impacts of climate change on occupational safety and health.
As the first Research Topic from the Occupational Toxicology section of Frontiers in Toxicology we want to emphasize the importance of the complex link between climate change and occupational health, focusing primarily on the rising toxicological risks in various work environments. We will also highlight possible differences in the impact of climate change on workers’ health in different geographic areas.
This topic is calling for submissions covering various aspects of toxicology, workplace health, and safety, such as the increased exposure to toxic materials due to climate change, effects of higher temperatures on the release and spread of toxins, as well as novel concerns in specific industries like agriculture, construction, and manufacturing. We will address both practical and methodological challenges in understanding, predicting, and managing toxicological risks associated with climate change.
We welcome original research, review papers, case studies, and methodological advancements related to the subject. Contributions could provide insights on future trends, propose strategies to mitigate toxicological risks and protect worker health, and foster a multidisciplinary dialogue on this critical issue.
This themed topic aims to enhance our understanding of this complex problem to create safer work environments in a changing world.
Keywords:
Climate Change, Workplace, Health, Safety, Toxicology
Important Note:
All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
