Kidney diseases, particularly chronic kidney disease (CKD), fundamentally impair the kidneys' ability to eliminate waste products derived from metabolism, closely linked to dietary intake. As renal function deteriorates, dietary management becomes crucial to mitigate the risk of complications while ensuring nutritional adequacy. This shifting dietary landscape encompasses restrictions ranging from plant- and animal-based foods to salt and water intake, underlining the necessity of tailored dietary adjustments to reflect each patient's clinical status and prevent protein-energy malnutrition.
This Research Topic aims to explore the multifaceted role of dietary management in kidney diseases, including CKD, glomerulopathies, kidney stones, and tubulointerstitial diseases. It intends to evaluate how dietary strategies can be optimized to prevent complications like hyperphosphatemia and hyperkalemia, support overall nutritional health, and potentially modulate disease progression.
To gather further insights in this crucial area of nephrology, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:
• Protein and phosphorus restriction strategies in CKD.
• Adjustments in plant-derived food consumption.
• Approaches to handle hyperkalemia through diet.
• Preventing protein malnutrition and sarcopenia in CKD patients.
• Tailored dietary recommendations across different stages of CKD and associated comorbidities (i.e., diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiac disease, hyperuricemia/gout), adapted to cultural peculiarities and religious beliefs.
• Evaluating the influence of dietary supplements on renal health.
• Dietary management in specific renal pathologies like IgA nephropathy and nephrotic syndrome.
• Preventative nutritional strategies in renal health care.
• Impact of salt intake on kidney disease management.
