This Research Topic explores how digital technologies can enhance the teaching and learning of environmental issues. This includes the use of virtual platforms, online simulations, and interactive tools based on innovative pedagogies (such as virtual exchange) that engage students in understanding ecological challenges. Digital environments provide innovative opportunities to raise awareness about sustainability, climate change, and biodiversity by offering immersive experiences and access to global data. The research investigates how these digital tools can foster deeper environmental literacy, promote active participation in eco-friendly practices, and support educators in delivering dynamic, interactive lessons on environmental conservation.
The primary goal of this Research Topic is to address the gap in effective environmental education, particularly in engaging students with complex ecological issues. Traditional methods often fail to capture the urgency and interconnectedness of environmental challenges like climate change, deforestation, and biodiversity loss. By leveraging digital environments, educators can create immersive and interactive experiences that make these topics more accessible and engaging. Recent advances in technology, such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and interactive simulations, offer innovative tools for teaching and learning. These tools can model real-world ecosystems, simulate the effects of environmental changes, and provide hands-on problem-solving experiences. Furthermore, digital collaboration tools, like online discussion boards and cloud-based platforms, enable students from different regions to work together on global environmental projects. To achieve this, the Research Topic will explore the integration of these digital tools into educational curricula, assess their effectiveness in improving environmental literacy and examine how they can be used to inspire more sustainable behaviors among students.
The Research Topic hopes to cover the exploration and application of digital tools that enhance environmental awareness and learning. Specific themes include the use of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) for ecosystem simulations, interactive platforms for climate change education, and digital collaboration for global environmental initiatives. Contributors are encouraged to explore case studies, pedagogical frameworks, and technological innovations that make environmental education more interactive and impactful. We welcome a variety of manuscript types, including original research, review articles, case studies, and theoretical perspectives. Submissions could also focus on the assessment of digital tools in formal and informal learning environments, innovative educational practices using technology, or interdisciplinary approaches that combine environmental science with digital pedagogy.
