Physiological optical imaging represents a range of cutting-edge technologies poised to revolutionize healthcare delivery by moving diagnostic capabilities from specialized labs directly to the point of care. Spanning the entire optical spectrum from ultraviolet (UV) to terahertz frequencies, these technologies promise to transform diagnostics by facilitating earlier detection and improved patient outcomes. Traditional imaging modalities like PET, MRI, and CT scans, although effective, are typically confined to well-equipped medical facilities. In contrast, advancements in sensor technology are enabling the integration of optical imaging techniques at the patient's bedside or in outpatient settings.

The goal of this Research Topic is to dismantle the existing silos within and between technological and medical domains that have historically hindered synergistic advancements in optical imaging. By providing a comprehensive overview of the latest developments across various specialties, this Research Topic aims to foster cross-disciplinary collaboration. This could lead to unified terminologies and methodologies which, in turn, enhance technological transfer and application across different medical fields. In doing so, it seeks to catalyze innovation and optimize the use of these technologies in clinical practice.

This Research Topic focuses on low-cost optical imaging technologies suitable for point-of-care settings. We encourage submissions across the full range of optical imaging techniques and medical specialties, aiming to cover:

• Absorption-based imaging
• Scattering-based imaging
• Fluorescence-based imaging
• Thermographic imaging
• Vibrational imaging, including Raman imaging
• Terahertz imaging

Submissions can include original research and comprehensive review articles detailing the application of large-area, endoscopic, and microscopic techniques. We look forward to contributions that push the boundaries of what is possible with optical imaging in healthcare.

Submissions may include processing elements where they are integral to demonstrating point-of-care performance; purely processing-focused work will be considered out of scope.
