The multifactorial nature of neurological diseases, coupled with their increasing prevalence, makes prevention and treatment one of the greatest challenges in global health. It is estimated that by 2050, more than a third of the world's population will be living with some form of brain disease. In terms of neurodegenerative diseases, the most common conditions affecting the global population include, but are not limited to, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and dementia.

From this perspective, approaches centered around the bidirectional communication between the gut and brain have gained prominence. Non-invasive interventions targeting this axis, such as dietary modifications and modulation of the gut microbiota, can influence various physiological processes including neuronal function, inflammation, and metabolism in both the central and enteric nervous systems. However, the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood.

This Research Topic aims to compile studies exploring the interplay between diet, gut microbiota, and neurodegenerative diseases. By understanding how the gut-brain axis contributes to these conditions, we seek to identify novel nutritional strategies for prevention and improved patient outcomes.

Submissions are invited in, but not restricted to, the following fields:

• Dietary factors associated with increased or decreased risk of neurodegenerative diseases.
• Dietary supplementation and impact on motor and gastrointestinal functions in disease models and/or patients.
• Bioactive compounds, traditional foods, and novel products that mitigate inflammation, oxidative stress, and cytotoxicity in the gut and brain.
• Prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics that can influence the host's physiological functions by interacting with the gut-brain axis.
• Innovative in vitro and in vivo methods to explore how diet and the gut microbiota contribute to neurodegenerative diseases.
