Neurogenetic diseases encompass a range of neurological conditions caused by genetic mutations that lead to the progressive degeneration and death of neurons. These disorders, which include hereditary ataxia, Huntington’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and Charcot-marie-tooth disease, often have hereditary components although sporadic cases do occur due to De novo mutations. With the global increase in life expectancy, the prevalence of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), Motor neurone disease (MND) and Frontotemporal lobe degeneration (FLD) is rising, placing significant burdens on patients, families, and healthcare systems. While some progress has been made in understanding the pathogenesis of these diseases, their exact etiologies involving genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors remain not fully elucidated, presenting ongoing challenges in treatment and management.This Research Topic aims to advance our understanding of neurogenetic disorders in conjunction with psychiatric disorders, which often co-occur and complicate patient management. Research has shown that individuals with neurodegenerative conditions are more susceptible to psychiatric comorbidities such as depression, anxiety, paranoia, compulsion and schizophrenia due to changes in brain structure and function coupled with increased psychological stress. Addressing the complex interplay between neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders, this topic seeks to improve diagnostics, therapeutic strategies, and ultimately patient prognosis through an interdisciplinary approach.To gather further insights into the intersections of neurology and psychiatry, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Newly discovered mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of neurogenetic and degenerative diseases.• Advances in precision medicine for diagnosing and treating these conditions.• Clinical practices and research developments in dementia and psychiatric disorder comorbidities.• Neurological mechanisms behind psychiatric comorbidities in degenerative diseases.• Early diagnosis and treatment strategies for psychiatric comorbidities.• Rare clinical reports and genetic analyses of unique cases.Appendix: We encourage submissions of different article types, including original research articles, reviews, and methodological papers on the specified themes to deepen our understanding and contribute effectively to the field.
