Inflammatory and immunological responses in oral tissues induced by microorganisms have garnered interest in various areas of medicine and dentistry. Scientific evidence has shown that periodontal diseases (PD) may be related to several types of systemic disorders, such as diabetes and insulin resistance, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory tract infections, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and, notably, neurological disorders. Furthermore, it is known that some types of bacteria in PD can also be found in peri-implantitis (PI), and both pathologies share similarities in the immunoinflammatory responses in the host. Thus, this topic aims to discuss the possible connection between PD/PI and neuroinflammation, as well as the pathways that can be used by microorganisms and/or their products to reach the brain and induce neuroinflammation, potentially contributing to diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and others.
Neurological diseases consistently attract significant interest in medical and biological research aimed at improving the impacts on physical, cognitive, and emotional conditions. Several studies have reported the relationship between oral infections and systemic disorders, such as diabetes and insulin resistance, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory tract infections, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and notably, neurological disorders. Thus, the objective of this research topic is to discuss the possible connection between periodontal/peri-implantitis diseases and neuroinflammation. Additionally, this topic aims to analyze the potential pathways used by microorganisms and/or their products to reach the brain and induce neuroinflammation, potentially contributing to the development of diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and others. It is essential to mention that this exploration can contribute to the identification of new molecules, proteins, and other factors associated with periodontitis/peri-implantitis and neurological diseases, thereby enhancing our understanding and potentially contributing to the development of new insights to facilitate the development of novel therapeutic approaches.
