March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and at Frontiers in Oncology we want to highlight the recent discoveries in the field and raise awareness of the importance of early diagnosis, multidisciplinary management, and technological innovation support.Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers globally with low survival rates and poor prognosis. However, it is also preventable and treatable when detected early. National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month 2025 focuses on disseminating information about risk factors such as age, diet, genetics, and lifestyle, while stressing the critical importance of early and regular screening. Current methods of treatment and therapeutic approaches mainly involves surgery, especially in localized stages combined with chemotherapy and radiotherapy.The forefront of early detection emphasizes methods like colonoscopies, stool-based tests, and innovative non-invasive techniques, including liquid biopsies. These advances not only enhance early detection rates but also increase accessibility and comfort for patients, potentially boosting screening participation and reducing cancer incidence rates.The goal of this Research Topic is to highlight breakthrough developments in cancer treatment. Precision medicine is transforming treatment protocols, allowing for therapies tailored to the genetic profile of a patient's tumor. Additionally, the field of immunotherapy is expanding, aiming to empower the body's immune system to target and destroy cancer cells effectively. Research into the gut microbiome is opening promising pathways for both prevention and therapy, offering hope for novel interventions.
