Electrochemical technologies such as fuel cells, electrolyzers, redox-flow batteries, electrodialysis, and membrane capacitive deionization are typically electric-chemical energy conversion-storage and separation technologies. Polymers membranes are key component in these electrochemical devices. Proton-exchange membranes (PEMs) which conduct positive charged ions have been used in many devices such as fuel cells, electrolyzers, and redox flow batteries. However, high capital costs and the use of noble metal catalysts are two of the current major disadvantages of PEMs based technology. In contrast, anion exchange membrane (AEM) technology has recently attracted a lot of attention due to their significant benefits in terms of transitioning from a highly acidic to an alkaline environment, high kinetics and no use of noble catalyst. The development and manufacturing of low-cost ion-exchange membranes with high performance and high stability accelerates the development of cost-effective electrochemical technologies for energy storage and conversion.

Anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are pivotal in enabling high-performance electrochemical devices, including fuel cells, electrolyzers, and other energy conversion systems. These membranes facilitate the transport of hydroxide ions while simultaneously acting as a barrier to prevent the crossover of reactants, which is crucial for efficient operation. However, despite their potential, AEMs face significant challenges that hinder their widespread adoption and commercialization. Key issues include limited chemical stability in alkaline environments, suboptimal ionic conductivity, and mechanical durability, etc.

This research topic aims to collect recent advancements in the development and application of anion exchange membranes (AEMs) for fuel cells, electrolyzers (water and carbon dioxide), redox-flow batteries, electro-dialysis, and membrane capacitive deionization. Research articles, reviews, and communications on new polymer design, membrane development and applications are welcome.
