Endocrine diseases pose significant health challenges, often contributing to premature morbidity and mortality. Traditional Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) have long been the gold standard for determining the efficacy and safety of medical interventions due to their rigorous design. However, the complexity, cost, ethical constraints, and limited external validity of RCTs necessitate supplemental research methodologies. Real-World Data (RWD), as defined by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), captures health information under routine clinical practice conditions, and Real-World Evidence (RWE) generated from this data has increasingly supported regulatory decisions and medical product approvals. This includes the approval of drugs like Pembrolizumab based on RWE from patient subsets across multiple trials, showcasing the pivotal role of RWD in drug approvals.
This Research Topic aims to deepen the understanding of how RWE can enhance the management of endocrine diseases. By integrating RWD, we can refine prevention strategies and improve treatment outcomes. This includes assessing the effectiveness of treatments in broader, more diverse populations and understanding the safety profiles of drugs in practical settings. For example, noninterventional studies with RWD have substantiated cardiovascular and renal benefits of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2is) among patients with type 2 diabetes.
To gather further insights in leveraging RWD for endocrine disorders, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:
o Transitioning efficacy trials to real-world clinical applications
o Supporting policy decisions and clinical guidelines through RWE
o Incorporating RWD in orphan drug development and rare disease research
o Conducting pharmacoeconomic evaluations using RWD
o Data mining from public RWD databases for enhanced drug safety monitoring
o Utilizing cutting-edge technologies in RWD studies from EMRs, claims databases, and registries
o Exploring the impact of RWD on treatment paradigms in pediatrics, geriatrics, and other vulnerable groups
We invite submissions of Original Research, Review Articles, and a variety of other article types focusing on the application of RWD in the field of endocrine diseases.
