The field of sports has long been dominated by male participation, leading to a significant gap in research focusing on women in sports and exercise. Traditionally, much of the research has been dominated by males, leaving a substantial void in understanding the unique physiological mechanisms and interactions specific to women when engaging in sports activities. Therefore, promoting research on a sample of women and creating consolidated knowledge about women's participation in sports and exercise should be a priority. Additionally, exploring evolutionary perspectives on sex differences in sports interest and motivation provides meaningful data for policymakers to design more inclusive strategies. Currently, there is a pressing need for studies that elucidate women's physiological responses to exercise, taking into account their specific needs, interests and potential for enhanced capacity and optimised performance, which in turn can augment overall physical activity levels, thereby bolstering public health.

This Research Topic aims to provide a platform for publishing high-quality research centred on women’s physical activity and exercise across different age groups, including children, adults, and older people. We are mainly interested in novel intervention studies within school, community-based, or sports settings aimed at monitoring and promoting women’s physical activity and physical fitness levels. Moreover, we also welcome papers investigating the effects of exercise on injury treatment or prevention alongside correlational and survey studies on the subject.

To gather further insights in enhancing women’s sports participation and health promotion, we welcome manuscripts addressing topics such as, but not limited to:

• Impact and implementation of physical activity interventions,
• Continuous monitoring systems for different age groups of women's physical activity,
• Physical activity programs tailored for individualised needs and for diverse groups of women,
• Interventions aimed at promoting physical activity across different age groups of women,
• Effects of health-promoting interventions,
• Assessment of fitness as a measure of health.
