The life phase of emerging adults (approx. 18-30) unfolds within societal contexts marked by global polycrises and pervasive social inequalities. The vulnerability of this distinct period is empirically substantiated, as it represents a pivotal time for the onset of mental disorders, with approximately two-thirds emerging by the age of 25. During these years, individuals engage in ongoing processes of identity construction and social integration, which interact with systemic pressures and structural barriers. Such dynamics influence mental health outcomes, corresponding with an unequal distribution of psychological risk and well-being across diverse populations and regions. Furthermore, this situation is frequently complicated by insufficient access to adequate care, particularly for those in marginalized positions.

This research topic aims to build a multi-level understanding of how macro-level factors, such as global crises and inequalities, translate into the mental health and subjective experience of young people in their transition to adulthood. To achieve this, it draws upon an ecosystemic framework to analyze the interplay between individuals, their social environments (e.g., family, educational institutions, workplaces, peer groups) and the broader sociohistorical context. This approach is complemented by critical perspectives that address the resulting subjective experiences, such as social alienation or the tension between societal demands and unequal opportunities. Central to this multi-level investigation is a focus on the lived experiences and agency of emerging adults, ensuring their perspectives are foundational to developing context-sensitive mental health support.
