Microbial spoilage is one of the major causes of food spoilage leads to breach the food safety and quality. Currently available synthetic chemicals often reported for the side-effects on health and environment. In addition, the recent reports on microbial resistance need some safer alternatives. Plant-based chemicals often enriched with a range of phytochemicals exhibited broad range of antimicrobial and antioxidant efficacy. Therefore, the use of botanicals could offer a sustainable way for food protection against the microbial and oxidative spoilage/deterioration. Further, the applications of nanotechnology boost the efficacy and targeted delivery of botanicals in food system.
This research topic and collection of article will offer comprehensive literature on the role of botanicals as a sustainable alternative of synthetic chemical for food safety and quality and will serve the baseline for the future research for researchers and industry professionals working in food-sector. It also offers the recent advancements, cutting-edge technologies, methods, challenges, and opportunities and trends in the preservation of food using botanicals.
We welcome the submission of original research, reviews, mini reviews, and perspective articles on topics including, but not limited to:
• Harnessing botanicals for safer and sustainable food systems
• Botanicals as antimicrobial agents for food safety
