Background

Bone dynamics are maintained by the cross-talk among cells that compose this tissue: the coupled action of osteoblasts, osteoclasts, and osteocytes is responsible for equilibrium. Through the signaling pathways commanded by these cells, bone remodeling is kept active. These pathways can be influenced by various substances, including pharmacological therapies that act to keep these pathways active, especially when conditions impairing bone remodeling equilibrium are present.
Considering the pharmacological therapies available to treat conditions like osteoporosis, hypertension, obesity, diabetes, among others, it is evident that they can affect bone remodeling or bone metabolism. In situations where bone needs to heal, these therapies can impact the cellular events that govern the repair process in bone.
Recently, pharmacological therapies have shifted from systemic to local action. Strategies to enhance the selective effect of molecules in the bone repair area have gained attention. The state of the art in the bone repair field is especially focused on improving the local action of molecules that can activate signaling pathways controlling the bone remodeling process.

This Research Topic will highlight the state of art about pharmacological therapies adopted to improve bone quality and, specifically, bone repair. Both systemic and local approaches will be highlighted, with the aim of providing a comprehensive overview of how bone repair can be enhanced using pharmacological therapies as tools.

This Research topic will focus on publishing in vitro, preclinical, and clinical studies aimed at evaluating the interference of drugs in bone regeneration procedures. Whether through systemic or local administration, incorporating strategies to enhance the effects of drugs on bone tissue, under homeostatic conditions or in the presence of systemic impairment, this issue will encompass studies with these approaches. Systematic or narrative review studies will also be accepted, as long as they address the topic: pharmacology and bone reconstructions.
