Background

Seismic isolation and damping systems have been widely adopted since the 1980s as effective and economical measures for protecting civil structures, particularly in earthquake-prone regions. Despite their demonstrated benefits, two critical challenges remain. The first concerns whether these systems perform as intended during real earthquakes, given structural complexity, pronounced nonlinear behavior, and long-term material deterioration. The second concerns whether they can maintain resilience under extreme or unanticipated seismic scenarios beyond those considered in design.

Addressing these challenges requires advances in both monitoring and diagnostic technologies, as well as in control strategies and structural analysis methodologies. This Special Collection aims to provide an international forum for researchers and practitioners to present cutting-edge developments and emerging technologies in these areas.

We welcome original research articles and systematic reviews focusing on long-term performance, resilient behavior, and next-generation monitoring and control of seismic isolation and damping structures. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

• Novel isolation or damping devices

• Innovative structural control strategies using isolation and damping techniques

• Long-term performance and degradation assessment of isolation and damping systems

• Advanced monitoring techniques, systems, and data-driven methods

• Novel diagnostic and condition-assessment approaches

• Maintenance strategies for isolation and damping systems

• Real-world implementations and case studies
