The musculoskeletal system comprises bones, skeletal muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Due to trauma, aging, diseases, and other factors, the musculoskeletal system may become damaged or degenerated. Tissue engineering is widely investigated, as artificial materials can be implanted to repair damage or promote healing. Incorporating specific molecules into biomaterials can further enhance therapeutic potential by counteracting inflammation, oxidative stress, or fibrosis to restore normal tissue structure.

Moreover, novel techniques, such as modified surgical approaches and new instruments, are applied to improve recovery from musculoskeletal disorders. To evaluate efficacy, the establishment of clinical cohorts with follow-ups, animal studies, and even multi-omic investigations are necessary.

The musculoskeletal system is complex yet coordinated, with various elements working together to facilitate movement. Currently, the incidence of musculoskeletal injuries and degeneration is increasing, highlighting the importance of developing new methods, techniques, and materials for therapy. This research topic aims to report the current progress in the use of biomaterials and techniques for treating musculoskeletal disorders or lesions and the identification of novel agents, in conjunction with biomaterials, to promote regeneration or retard degeneration of bone, cartilage, the spinal cord, and skeletal muscle.
