Liquid crystalline electrolytes (LCEs) are emerging as exceptional soft matter materials, offering a compelling blend of self-organized molecular order, fluidic dynamics, and tunable ionic conductivity. Recent years have witnessed a surge in interest surrounding LCEs due to their unique ability to bridge fundamental physical properties and advanced functionalities across energy storage systems, electronic devices, and sensing platforms. Despite impressive progress, numerous questions remain regarding the precise mechanisms by which liquid crystalline order, polymer matrix design, nanostructuring, and composite engineering confer superior electrochemical, dielectric, and mechanical performance. Ongoing studies are revealing how marrying the principles of liquid crystal science with the versatility of polymer and gel electrolytes can surmount crucial limitations of traditional inorganic, organic, and polymeric electrolytes. Notably, advances in molecular engineering, integration of nanofillers, and use of machine learning and artificial intelligence for property optimization are redefining the landscape. However, a comprehensive, interdisciplinary synthesis of results—and clear pathways for real-world device implementation—remain vital next steps for the field.

This Research Topic aims to unite and inspire research exploring the design, understanding, and integration of liquid crystalline electrolytes, polymer-based systems, and nanocomposite soft matter for advanced technological applications. Our goal is to elucidate the structural features and interactive phenomena—spanning molecular order, composite interfaces, and functional inclusions—that dictate ion transport, mechanical robustness, and material longevity in next-generation devices. Especially welcomed are contributions that leverage novel synthesis, advanced characterization, theoretical insights, or data-driven discovery to advance both fundamental knowledge and practical capability. Central questions include: How does liquid crystalline or supramolecular order in polymers and gels enhance ion conduction and dielectric behavior? What design and processing principles maximize performance in complex architectures? How can nanofillers and smart materials be exploited for tailored, multifunctional electrolytes?

This Research Topic is dedicated to soft matter innovations at the interface of liquid crystalline, polymer, and composite electrolytes. We emphasize cross-disciplinary perspectives spanning chemistry, materials science, device physics, and engineering.
