CO2 capture and conversion is a vital research area aimed at mitigating climate change impacts resulting from escalating atmospheric CO2 levels. Excessive CO2 emissions from industrial processes and fossil fuel combustion have contributed to global warming and ecological deterioration. The focal point revolves around the efficient capture and transformation of CO2 into value-added commodities. CO2 capture encompasses the separation and containment of CO2 from emissions to prevent its release into the atmosphere. Various techniques, including absorption, adsorption, and membrane separation, are being investigated to optimize the capture process. Upon successful capture, CO2 can be converted into valuable products, such as synthetic fuels, polymers, and organic carbonates, via diverse pathways. Efficient CO2 capture and conversion technologies play a pivotal role in attaining sustainability objectives and facilitating the transition towards a low-carbon economy. Ongoing research aims to enhance capture efficiency, explore innovative conversion routes, and optimize catalysts and reaction conditions.
The primary focus of this Research Topic is to share cutting-edge advancements spanning from fundamental scientific discoveries to the creation of innovative processes and technologies related to the development of membranes and new porous materials for CO2 capture and separation. We particularly highlight the use of CO2 as a valuable feedstock in the chemical, energy, and materials sectors, aiming to reduce environmental impact. Our efforts extend beyond CO2 capture and involve exploring its potential for various applications, such as the development of novel chemical processes, efficient energy utilization, and sustainable materials production. By emphasizing the utilization of CO2, we strive to contribute to a more sustainable future by minimizing environmental harm and maximizing the value derived from this abundant greenhouse gas.
To gather further insights in material and process innovation for CO2 management, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:
1. CO2 conversion to generate synthetic fuels, polymers, organic carbonates, and intermediate products.
2. Supercritical CO2 utilization in natural product extraction, catalysis, and separation.
3. Use of CO2 as an oxidant.
4. Materials for CO2 activation and adsorption.
5. Heterogeneous and homogeneous catalytic reactions involving CO2.
