Background

This Research Topic stems from the thematic session of the same title at the 23rd IPPA Congress (IPPA23) held in Yogyakarta from November 2nd to the 6th, 2026.

The session and this Research Topic aim to attract a diverse range of new and innovative approaches to environmental archaeology in the Indo-Pacific region. Multidisciplinary approaches to human-environment interactions in the past that contribute to contemporary climatic, environmental and social challenges are preferred. Topics can range from the Early Pleistocene to the industrialised age and be situated within the bioarchaeological, archaeological science or earth sciences subfields of research, but must be relevant for the environmental archaeology field.

The collection welcomes submissions from members of the IPPA community conducting research in the Indo-Pacific region – particularly from participants involved with the session, but also relevant work from delegates who presented in the wider IPPA23 conference.

Note for authors: The default language style at Frontiers is American English. However, for this collection, the Topic Editors ask that submissions are in British English. Please specify on the first page of your manuscript submission that you would prefer your article be formatted in British English for our editorial office's consideration.
