For decades, women have played a pivotal role in advancing neuroscience, yet their contributions often remain underrepresented in scientific discourse. Integrative neuroscience—an interdisciplinary area bridging molecular, cellular, cognitive, and computational approaches—benefits immensely from different perspectives that foster innovation and inclusivity. Women scientists –be it professors, PhD students or postdoctoral fellows- have generated important research on neuroplasticity, neurodevelopment, aging and neuropsychiatric disorders, to name a few. Diversity of scientific approaches is also influenced by geography, a fact that may be overlooked in scattered publications. Thus, this Research Topic aims to celebrate and amplify the work of women scientists in integrative neuroscience, from different backgrounds and sub-disciplines, highlighting their groundbreaking research, methodological innovations, and leadership in interdisciplinary collaborations.
Beyond showcasing scientific achievements, this collection aims to address systemic challenges faced by women in neuroscience, including barriers to career progression, representation in leadership, and access to resources. Women’s perspectives on the ethical problems posed by integrative neuroscience, such as the use of AI, research reproducibility and transference of basic science to clinical practice, are also an integral part of this special number. By creating a platform for dialogue and visibility, this initiative seeks to inspire future generations, promote gender equity, and demonstrate how diversity drives scientific excellence. We encourage the participation of scientists from different countries and backgrounds. In keeping with the goals of this special issue, the first and/or corresponding authors of the submitted works must be women.
We invite contributions that include, but are not limited to:
• Original Research led by women scientists in integrative neuroscience, spanning molecular, systems, cognitive, and computational domains.
• Reviews and Mini-Reviews summarizing advances in neuroscience from female-led research groups.
• Perspectives and Opinion Articles on gender equity, mentorship, and policy changes to support women in science.
• Methodological Innovations introduced by female researchers that advance integrative approaches.
• Case Studies and Policy Papers addressing structural challenges and proposing actionable solutions for inclusivity in neuroscience.
This Research Topic encourages interdisciplinary submissions that connect neuroscience with psychology, AI, clinical applications, and neuroethics.
