Skin diseases such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, hidradenitis suppurativa, atopic dermatitis, alopecia areata are increasingly recognized as systemic conditions rather than isolated dermatological disorders. Growing evidence highlights their strong association with multiple comorbidities, including cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, autoimmune disorders, and mental health conditions. Chronic inflammation, immune dysregulation, and shared genetic and environmental factors are thought to drive these complex interactions. Despite these advances, the mechanisms underlying these associations remain incompletely understood, and clinical management often fails to address the full burden of disease. A comprehensive understanding of comorbidities in dermatology is therefore essential to improve patient outcomes and guide holistic care.
This Research Topic aims to provide a comprehensive and multidisciplinary overview of comorbidities associated with skin diseases, with a focus on both mechanistic insights and clinical implications. We seek to explore the biological pathways linking dermatological conditions with systemic disorders, including immune, metabolic, and neuropsychiatric axes. In addition, this Topic will address the impact of comorbidities on disease severity, quality of life, and treatment outcomes. Particular emphasis will be placed on emerging biomarkers, personalized medicine approaches, and integrated care models. By bringing together basic, translational, and clinical research, this collection aims to bridge current knowledge gaps and promote innovative strategies for early detection, risk stratification, and comprehensive management of patients with skin diseases.
We welcome submissions covering a broad range of topics related to comorbidities in skin diseases, including but not limited to:
- Pathophysiological mechanisms - Epidemiology - Clinical burden - Therapeutic implications - Specific diseases (e.g., psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, hidradenitis suppurativa) - Focus on shared pathways such as chronic inflammation, immune dysregulation, or microbiome alterations.
We particularly encourage studies exploring multidisciplinary care approaches, digital health solutions, and real-world evidence. Article types may include Original Research, Reviews, Mini Reviews, Clinical Trials, and Perspective articles. Submissions integrating dermatology with other specialties (e.g., cardiology, psychiatry, endocrinology) are especially encouraged to foster a holistic understanding of patient care.
